Story

Hello y’all, hopefully this post is not too long as I don’t want to take up a lot of your time.

So let’s begin from the beginning. I moved into my new apartment in July of last year, and no one lived below me for a couple of months.

After a couple of months, a guy moved in. The first thing I experienced from him was blasting his music so loudly that it sounded like it was coming from my apartment, as well as vibrating my floors and walls.

I have never met him before this, and after that, I asked him to just try to keep quiet after 11 PM, as that is around the time I go to bed. Very frequently, he does not shut it off after 11, and I get woken up at 3 AM to it.

There was even a time when I had to miss four hours of my scheduled hours at work because he played it until 4 in the morning, and I couldn’t sleep and had to get up at 5:30 for work to work a 12-hour shift. I have had minimal contact with him for the occasional neighbor stuff, like can you grab my package off the porch so it doesn’t get stolen, etc.

Well, a couple of days ago, he asked me to use my WiFi for a couple of days until he can pay for his own WiFi. I allowed him to use it free of charge because I know we are all struggling in this economy.

However, I have this deep fear of a fire happening at my house, so I unplug everything at night that is not being used, WiFi being one of them, as I do not need it when I am sleeping. I woke up this morning to messages from the neighbor that are so disrespectful about the WiFi not being on. AITA?

Update

Thank you all for your replies. I have decided to change my WiFi password and not allow him to use it.

A little more background on a couple of things: the apartment I live in is more of a duplex, so there is only me upstairs and the downstairs neighbor who lives here. As for the noise complaint, I have called the police, and the only thing that happens is he will turn the music off when they come, but the next day it is back to being on.

I have learned there are some battles worth fighting, and this one isn’t worth my battle, as it is never going to change no matter who I go to about it. As for the whole letting him use the WiFi thing, I don’t want to cause issues while I’m living here, and I want to keep the peace to not make things worse than they are.

However, at this point, I have done everything to keep the peace, and none of it seems to be working, so I might as well just be an a-hole.

Update 2

The WiFi password has been changed, and the WiFi name has been changed. I don’t think he appreciated that because he blew my phone up while I was in class, then just texted me “Bet” when I did not answer.

I’m pretty sure he has his own WiFi now, as his music is once again blaring. I’m also pretty sure he is planning something because I was just outside with my dog and girlfriend, and he was recording us through the window on his phone.

I’m not really sure where to go from here, as I cannot move just yet, so I think I am going to talk to some people to see what I can do from this point forward.

Update 3

I contacted the company that deals with my rental and let them know everything that has been happening. They said that the only thing they can do is give him a warning, and from there, they cannot do anything, and the police had to be called every time.

Expert Advice for Resolving the Neighborly Conflict

Resolving conflicts with neighbors can be challenging, especially when emotions run high and boundaries are tested. Here are some practical steps for both the narrator and the neighbor to consider, aimed at fostering understanding and finding a resolution.

For the Narrator

  • Document Everything: Keep a detailed record of noise disturbances, including dates, times, and the nature of the noise. This documentation can be helpful if further action is needed.
  • Communicate Calmly: Consider reaching out to the neighbor in a calm and non-confrontational manner. Express how the noise affects your daily life and sleep schedule. Use “I” statements to avoid sounding accusatory (e.g., “I feel tired when the music is loud late at night”).
  • Set Clear Boundaries: Clearly communicate your boundaries regarding noise levels and WiFi usage. Let the neighbor know what is acceptable and what is not, and be firm yet respectful in your approach.
  • Explore Mediation: If direct communication doesn’t yield results, consider involving a neutral third party, such as a mediator, to facilitate a conversation between you and the neighbor.
  • Involve Authorities if Necessary: If the noise continues and the situation escalates, don’t hesitate to contact your rental company or local authorities again. Provide them with your documentation to support your case.

For the Neighbor

  • Reflect on Your Actions: Take a moment to consider how your behavior may be affecting your neighbor. Loud music late at night can disrupt others’ lives, and being mindful of this can foster a better living environment.
  • Open a Dialogue: If you feel comfortable, initiate a conversation with your neighbor. Ask them about their concerns and listen actively. This can help build rapport and understanding.
  • Respect Boundaries: Acknowledge the boundaries set by your neighbor regarding noise and WiFi usage. Respecting these boundaries can lead to a more harmonious living situation.
  • Seek Alternatives: If financial struggles are impacting your ability to maintain a peaceful home, consider exploring other options for entertainment that don’t disturb others, such as using headphones for music or movies.
  • Apologize if Necessary: If you realize that your actions have been inconsiderate, a sincere apology can go a long way in mending the relationship with your neighbor.

Conclusion

Conflict resolution requires effort from both parties. By approaching the situation with empathy and a willingness to communicate, both the narrator and the neighbor can work towards a peaceful coexistence. Remember, maintaining a respectful and understanding attitude is key to resolving conflicts effectively.
