Our Story
We are Mexican Americans. Most of my family is in Texas, but I live in a blue state with my rainbow children.
My beloved grandfather fought the Nazis in WWII. He taught me civics, and I watched the civil rights movement at his knee.
My grandfather would not recognize this country as it is so full of hatred for the other. My brother agrees with me but says to keep politics out of the family thread.
I cannot keep quiet.

Expert Advice for Resolving the Conflict
In situations where relationships become toxic, it’s essential to approach the conflict with empathy and a focus on personal well-being. Here are practical steps for both the original poster (OP) and the friends involved:
For the Original Poster (OP)
- Reflect on Your Feelings: Take time to understand why you feel the group is toxic. Write down specific behaviors or incidents that have led to this conclusion.
- Communicate Openly: If you feel comfortable, consider having a candid conversation with the group. Express your feelings without blaming others, focusing on how their actions affect you.
- Set Boundaries: Clearly define what behaviors you will not tolerate. Communicate these boundaries to the group, and be prepared to enforce them.
- Prioritize Self-Care: Engage in activities that promote your mental and emotional well-being. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who uplift you.
- Consider Gradual Distance: If the situation doesn’t improve, it may be necessary to distance yourself from the group. This can be done gradually to minimize conflict.
For the Friends in the Group
- Listen Actively: If OP reaches out to discuss their feelings, listen without becoming defensive. Acknowledge their perspective and validate their feelings.
- Reflect on Group Dynamics: Consider whether the group’s behavior might be perceived as toxic. Engage in self-reflection and discuss as a group if necessary.
- Be Open to Change: If the group values OP’s friendship, be willing to make adjustments to create a more supportive environment.
- Encourage Healthy Communication: Foster an atmosphere where everyone feels safe to express their feelings and concerns without fear of judgment.
- Respect OP’s Decision: If OP chooses to distance themselves, respect their choice. Understand that it’s a personal decision aimed at their well-being.
Ultimately, the goal is to foster healthier relationships and ensure that everyone involved feels valued and respected. Open communication and mutual respect are key to resolving conflicts and maintaining friendships.
